Rachel, Gatsby and Me

Last night in the States

In case anyone is doubting my ability to NOT be ready for things, I was only half packed by the time Rachel absolutely had to pick me up. We weren't headed to the airport though. I spent my final night with Rachel, and we went to see the Great Gatsby as performed by the Washington Ballet Company. The show was amazing. The score, performed by a live jazz band, was brilliant, and still playing in my head. It is a must see show! It was a great way to spend my final night in America. In hindsight though, it should have been obvious that the best way to spend my final night would have been to sleep. You only live once or so they say. After the show we hung out for a bit, and then we drove to the airport. I finished packing my bag in the back of her SUV, in the airport parking lot.

Truly Last Minute Packing

Truly Last Minute Packing

We said our goodebyes and I headed into the desolate Dulles terminal to wait for my 5:26 AM flight to Buenos Aires.

T -1 Week and Counting

Where's the excitement?

overcast 38 °F

Here it is my inaugural blog entry!

Exactly one week from now I will be a moments from landing at Ministro Pistarini International Airport in Buenos Aires trying to contain palpable excitement. Will it be the giggles, the shivers, wild leg and arm spasms, loud outbursts? Who knows, but god help those unfortunate souls sitting around me.

As for right now I’m still not feeling the overwhelming excitement. There is a lot of preparation that goes into a trip like this and I’m still somewhat bogged down with that practicality. Beside that though, this trip will be the realization of a dream I’ve had for quite some time now. This idea has been with me in one form or another since 2007. It has always been an abstract thing… but not for much longer. My mind clearly has not noted the change yet.

Below is the map of my itinerary as it stands now. It will be subject to change of course. Approximately 24,000 miles, 96 days, 27ish destinations, 5 countries, 1 backpack.

The major stops will be Uruguay: Montevideo / Argentina: Buenos Aires, Iguazu Falls, Ushuaia / Chile: Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, Santiago, Easter Island, San Pedro de Atacama / Bolivia: Salar de Uyuni, La Paz, Isla del Sol / Peru: Cuzco, Choquequirao, Machu Picchu, Manu Biosphere Reserve, Lima, Trujillo & Iquitos.

I hope to update with entries, photos, and maybe even a few videos at lease every few days. So feel free to live vicariously. I hope you’ll stick around for the rest; the best stuff is right around the corner!
